The fall of a legend: why rifle teams outplay snipers in 2026

Has the AWP era in CS2 really come to its logical conclusion? The current state of the competitive meta is best described by one funny but very telling episode. In early 2025, the young star of the scene, donk, jokingly suggested that the developers at Valve completely delete the sniper rifle from the shooter. In response, ZywOo — undeniably the best sniper on the planet — publicly asked the game’s creators to ignore this audacity.

Although it started as a usual exchange of pleasantries on social media, it hid real tactical tension. Over the last eighteen months, the community has been witnessing a tectonic shift: rifles (AK-47 and M4) are starting to push the “green gun” off its pedestal. Let’s figure out why this happened.

Has the AWP era in CS2 really come to an end? The CSGO-NEWS blog breaks down the new meta where aggressive riflers and rifle-heavy teams dominate the server.

Old school and classical logic

Throughout the history of the Counter-Strike series, the sniper rifle has remained the ultimate weapon on the map. A competent sniper forced the enemy team to completely change their style: to act slower, waste a huge amount of utility (grenades), and fear every open angle.

Previously, entire rosters were built around one player with an optic. He was given the best drop, supported by flashbangs, and space was created for him. The shooting mechanics in the new version of the game haven’t changed: it’s still a one-shot at any distance. It would seem that the logic should have remained, but in practice, everything went according to a different scenario.

What changed in the new meta?

The first wake-up call for optic lovers came exactly from donk. In his debut year at the tier-1 level, he posted incredible statistical numbers at LAN tournaments, playing exclusively with automatic weapons. He outperformed any dedicated sniper in terms of numbers. At the same time, he didn’t wait for the team to create ideal conditions for him — he opened up bombsites himself and created space for his teammates.

As practice shows, the classical AWP era in CS2 has transformed due to the changed pacing. Previously, passive holding of long distances dominated. Today’s gameplay rewards early territory control, aggressive peeks, and incredibly fast rotations. There is simply no time left to stand and hold one angle in the scope. Riflers handle dynamic pressure much more effectively.

Evidence using the example of the world’s best teams

To not be unfounded, the CSGO-NEWS team suggests looking at the results of the most successful squads in recent years:

  • Team Vitality: Having won two Majors in a row in 2025, they continued their hegemony. Yes, they have the genius ZywOo, but their system has become thinner. ZywOo has turned into a universal hybrid who easily picks up an AK-47 if the optic becomes a tactical burden. Their success is built not on sniper duels, but on a massive foundation of riflers (flameZ and ropz) generating entry frags.
  • Team Spirit: The winners of the Shanghai tournament have a clear division. While sh1ro plays the role of a dedicated sniper, donk remains the main engine of progress. It is telling that the team’s peak form always coincides with rounds where rifles dominate. The title of the best entry fragger of the year proves that victories are forged in dynamic firefights, not in a passive hold.
  • FURIA: The Brazilians entered 2026 in the second spot of the global ladder. Their structure is a 100% bet on automatic weapons. The driving force is KSCERATO and yuurih. The sniper only complements their firepower, but the team does not critically depend on him.

For contrast, you can look at Team Falcons. The organization assembled the most star-studded roster in history, uniting phenomenal talents — NiKo and m0NESY. Despite colossal ambitions and bringing in the best players on the planet, they never managed to win a Major. Relying solely on elite individual performance with a sniper rifle no longer guarantees trophies.

Is there a place for snipers today?

Does this mean the heavy rifle has become useless? Of course not. ZywOo continues to collect MVP medals, m0NESY at his peak form can solo close out maps, and sh1ro cements his team’s defense.

What changed is not the power of the weapon, but its purpose. The optic is no longer the center of the universe around which the other four players revolve. Now it is a highly specialized support tool. A modern tier-1 player must be a hybrid. Pure snipers who get lost with a regular assault rifle in their hands and become a burden in force-buy rounds are extinct as a class.

Verdict from CSGO-NEWS

The statistics are relentless: the Average Damage per Round (ADR) and the overall rating of the best riflers on the planet now exceed the numbers of snipers. Furthermore, the economic risk of losing an expensive rifle in the early rounds often leads to losing the entire half of the map. Teams with a strong core of riflers forgive themselves such economic mistakes much more easily.

Summing up, it is safe to say that the familiar AWP era in CS2 is a thing of the past. The weapon has not disappeared from the servers, but the meta has shifted it from the pedestal to the position of a powerful support tool. Aggression, entry frags, and versatility are now valued higher than static map control. Read our blog, practice your AK-47 shooting, and win in the new realities of competitive matchmaking!
